An engineer and hydrologist, an internationally recognised agricultural and integrated water management expert. He is a scientific advisor to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Water Research Program, an honorary member of the Hungarian Hydrological Society, and a Scientific Council of the National Water Authority member. He is the author of numerous books and studies and has received multiple awards and positions. He has been a professor at the University of Bonn since 2023 and a research professor at LUPS since 2023. In 2003, he became the founding director of the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security in Bonn. He later served as Deputy Rector responsible for Europe and Africa at the UNU. He served as Executive Director of the international "Global Water System" project at the invitation of the University of Bonn until 2012, focusing on examining the global context of water management. He played a significant role in the success of the three Budapest Water Summits and in ensuring that water received its chapter in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
